Bringing Cassie Home

When we picked up Cassie, our Coachmen 274BH, in Salt Lake City, we knew the drive back to California was going to be an adventure. What we didn’t expect was just how much the journey would teach us about life on the road—wind, family moments, and a few surprises along the way.

Stop 1: Utah Lake

Our very first night in Cassie was at Utah Lake State Park. We were so excited—first night, first sleep in our cozy bunks. But the weather had other plans. The winds howled at 50+ miles per hour, rocking the camper and keeping us on our toes. It was nerve-wracking in the moment, but also kind of thrilling: trial by fire (or in this case, wind) for our very first RV night.

Pros of Utah Lake:

  • Close to Salt Lake City—great for an overnight stop.

  • Beautiful lake views when the wind isn’t trying to blow you over.

  • Easy pull-through spots that made setting up stress-free for RV newbies.

Stop 2: Otter Creek, Utah

Next, we spent two nights at Otter Creek State Park. This place stole our hearts—not because it was flashy, but because of what it meant to our family. We fished, braved more strong winds, and shared quiet time together. Most importantly, this was where my husband’s family gathered to spread his late father’s ashes. The setting was peaceful and meaningful, and it’s a memory that will forever be tied to Cassie’s first trip.

Pros of Otter Creek:

  • Fantastic fishing opportunities.

  • Wide open spaces perfect for family gatherings.

  • A peaceful, less crowded spot that makes you slow down and just be present.

Stop 3: KOA in Hurricane, Utah

Our last stop before heading home was a KOA in Hurricane, Utah. Honestly? This one wasn’t our favorite. The sites felt barren and exposed, with little shade or privacy. It worked fine for an overnight, but it didn’t have the charm or comfort we look for when camping with kids.

Pros of Hurricane KOA:

  • Close to Zion National Park (great location if you’re just looking for a base).

  • Clean facilities, as you’d expect from a KOA.

  • Convenient stopover on the way west.

Final Thoughts on Our Journey

Bringing Cassie home was unforgettable. From battling wild winds at Utah Lake, to fishing and saying goodbye at Otter Creek, to learning what we don’t love at Hurricane KOA—it was the perfect mix of adventure, family, and learning what RV life is all about. It set the stage for many more trips to come.
